2. Pope Gregory bans lay investiture. - the cause : the church began to resent the control and did not feel that the bishops should be under the control of a king, the outcome: Gregory excommunicated with Henry IV
3. Henry IV travels to Canossa. - the cause: tried to win the pope's forgiveness, the outcome: Henry was humiliated by the pope 
4. Representatives of Church and emperor meet in Worms. - the cause: Gregory and Hnery's successors fought over lay investiture, the outcome: made a compromise, the church could grant a bishop but the emperor had to appoint them
5. Lombard League fights Battle of Legnano. - the cause: Frederick did not focus building royal power. Instead he invaded the rich cities of Italy, the outcome: Lombard League defeated Frederick, Frederick made peace with he pope and returned to Germany
